Italy: Update on the Health Situation of Imprisoned Anarchist Comrade Alfredo Cospito [en]

24.07.19: Comrade Alfredo Cospito started feeling unwell 15 days ago, right after his hunger strike ended. He immediately insisted on a CT scan. In fact, as soon as the CT scan was carried out, he was urgently transferred to the hospital where he was operated on. The operation went for 5 hours as they had to remove his gallbladder, which had ruptured. All this because the doctors had been saying for months that it was necessary to operate, but the prison kept postponing, trying to solve the problem with tablets, which in reality did not solve anything. The situation got worse with the hunger strike.

Italy: Communiqué of Alfredo from the prison of Ferrara [en]

Ferrara, July 14th, 2019
I give you the tragicomic news that my bloody gall bladder after 5 hours of operation has left us (8 July) due to a hunger strike. Excuse me but I’m still not able to respond decently to your many letters. But count on my answers. The only positive thing is that I lost 21 kg. Keep on writing to me.
Sure that the struggle in solidarity with the comrades proceeds ever more effectively.
Alfredo

[Note: Alfredo refers to the hunger strike against the restrictions and conditions in the AS2 section of L’Aquila prison undertaken in Italy by some imprisones anarchists, from May 29th until the end of June].

Italy: “Vetriolo” — Anarchist paper, issue 2, autumn 2018 [in Italian] [en]

It’s been a long while. After a year we are publishing another issue of Vetriolo, issue number 2. We haven’t brought out the paper more frequently up to now, nor have we wanted to. Not that we didn’t have anything to say during this time, on the contrary. However we have never strenuously followed the possibility of giving a strict periodicity to the publication, which because of its form (with fairly concise texts of agitation, analysis and topicality as well as more extensive and complicated theoretical articles) is not suited to it. At the same time we’d like the paper to come out without long delays. In any case we think that this paper is an important instrument for the anarchist movement regardless of the frequency with which it comes out. The pages of Vetriolo have always been and will continue to be a means aimed at discussion, dialogue and confrontation among anarchists. The paper will continue to give time and space to dialogue and debate among revolutionaries, including those who find themselves imprisoned. In this issue there are writings and articles by Marco, Anna and Alfredo, imprisoned following the arrests of the repressive operation ‘scripta manent’ of 6th September 2016.

Italy: Sripta Manent trial (started on 16/11/2017) — Statement to the court by anarchist Alfredo Cospito [en]

(translated by act for freedom now!)

On 16/11/2017 the SCRIPTA MANENT trial began inside the bunker courtroom of ‘Le Vallette’ prison in Turin. Imprisoned anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito read a long declaration. Alfredo was not present in court as he was subjected to video conferencing from inside the AS2 unit in the prison of Ferrara.

Declaration to the Court:

Benevento 14th August 1878- Turin 16th 2017

Malefactors on trial

The Union of Egoists is your instrument, it is the sword with which you increase your natural strength; the Union exists thanks to you. Society, on the other hand, demands much from you and it exists without you; in short, society is sacred, Union is yours; society uses you, the Union–you use it – Stirner

O, gentlemen, the time of life is short! .. An if we live, we live to tread on kings — Shakespeare, Henry IV

I regret every crime in my life that I haven’t committed, every desire that I have not satisfied – Senna Hoy

Alfredo Cospito
Ready or Not... [en]

In these three years I was faced with choices which led me by the hand through a path fraught with crossroads and bifurcations.

Like on a minefield, I had to decide carefully where to step, with my pride and my self-respect at stake. The first choice I had to face with was whether I should continue to contribute, or let the prison overflow me, patiently waiting to get out. As limited as my situation is, I chose to continue to contribute through the written word. Once I made this decision I faced another crossroad: whether to confine myself — ecumenically — from this “high point” of my “status” (sic.) of a “revolutionary” prisoner — to bestowing blessings in each directions, applauding to every anarchist practice, paying attention not to make any enemies; or to use the weapon of critique, ever more harshly, trying to outline some analysis, to open some discourses. I chose the easier way (at least for me): openly push my critique to the extremes, at the cost of isolation (less letters, less information, less generic solidarity).

Italy: Text by anarchist comrade Afredo Cospito from Ferrara prison (2016) [en]

With 30 years of charges on my back, it may seem absurd to feel the need to communicate projects and considerations. With the insistent censorship that distorts everything I write and say, it may seem stupid and mad to continue to resolutely communicate and write considerations lending themselves to censorship. I need such stupidity and madness to feel still alive and participating.
I have only one choice, back to the wall: continuing struggling, continuing with every means at my disposal.

I got inspiration to write this text from the prosecutor Sparagna [in charge for Scripta Manent]; in his solitary “interlocutory — monologue” he claimed with ill-concealed embarrassment that he got us by process of elimination, by the “scorched earth” that the anarchist movement in Italy made around us. Is it possible that the anarchist movement here in Italy sank so low as to not feel empathy with comrades caught in a grip of repression, to think of us as a foreign body?
The truth can not be found in the “specious” and stupid logic of a prosecutor from Turin. The truth is hidden in the folds, in different expressions of solidarity that have been addressed to us, in the opportunity that even a wave of repression such this one could give us. This is apparent from many actions expressing solidarity across the globe to us, this is apparent from a few but significant solidarity statements that we received. At first glance these statements may seem like the usual solidarity for appearances’ sake, but at my eyes they become fully meaningful.
Maybe because of their origins, comrades with different projects, despite everything, were profoundly, directly, touched. Maybe because all these comrades are in some way part of this anarchism of praxis that keeps anarchy alive and kicking, and well reacting across the globe. For this and for many other reasons, those words of solidarity are no small things and can become an opportunity, especially if they can go beyond the repressive matter.

Mobile phone mast sabotaged in solidarity with prisoner Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike against the censorship imposed on those arrested in op. Scripta Manent. Break the isolation

Italy: Anarchist journal “Vetriolo” — Solidarity with imprisoned anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike (05/05/2017) [en]

On May 3th, the anarchist Alfredo Cospito — prisoner in high security regime AS2 of Ferrara prison for the kneecapping of Adinolfi, CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare, and recently recipient of another arrest warrant for the operation “scripta manent” — started a ten-days hunger strike against the censorship that blocks most of his incoming and outgoing correspondence. Alfredo is asking comrades to send lot of books, magazines, letters to support his hunger strike and break the isolation dictated by prison censorship.
The prosecutor Sparagna from Turin is imposing the censor against the comrades imprisoned for operation “scripta manent”. In the last few months the censorship has become more stringent, and a lot of correspondence is systematically censored and blocked; books, magazines and any kind of stuff sent him almost never reach the destination. The censor struck also a text that Alfredo sent us in December, to be published in “Vetriolo”. In the same way an Anna’s text, for another publication, was seized in January. At the same time, not one single copy of our journal reached Alfredo and other prisoners: seized by guards, or frequently simply disappeared.
It is clear that if isolation against comrades becomes more intense and so pressing is also, and above all, because of the censorship and the blocking of correspondence. It is clear that the power can not tolerate that comrades contribute to the discussion between rebellious and enemies of authority. The miserable work of spying and the censorship are systematically intensified because the power presumes and imagines that it can annihilates and silences the anarchists in its prisons.
It is necessary therefore make a brief analysis of this odious tool of

Prison of Ferrara [Italy]: Anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito on 3rd day of hunger strike — “Break The Isolation!” (05/05/2017) [en]

From a letter received yesterday, May 4th 2017, we learn that the hunger strike carried on from May 3rd, which will go on for 10 days, following the heavy censorship, is a result of an extended period and of continual block of most incoming and outgoing letters, books, news etc. sent him by so many comrades.
Especially, he writes, the letters sent him from one of us, editors of C.N.A. [Anarchist Black Cross], have all been blocked, 7 out of 7, in the last month.
In this letter of just few lines it is highlighted that the censorship has already been extended for another three months more than a month ago, but it started to hammering heavier than usual after the investigation has been closed.
From what he says, also in this letter, in Rebibbia [prison in Rome] is even worse.

He concludes the letter with a shout: “BREAK THE ISOLATION!”

Prison of Ferrara [Italy]: Anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito on hunger strike (03/05/2017) [en]

Today anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito begins a ten-days hunger strike against the censorship imposed to him by prosecutor Sparagna [in charge of op. “Scripta Manent”], which blocks almost the whole incoming and outgoing correspondence.

Alfredo asks all comrades outside to send books, magazines, letters and printed materials in general, in protest and in support of his strike.

From Ferrara Prison to Alessandria Prison [Italy]: Communique of comrade Alfredo Cospito in solidarity with the comrade Marco Bisesti (05/02/2017) [en]

I have received fragmentary information that in prison of Alessandria Marco has opposed the installation of bocche di lupo [special windows that let air and light in the cell but prevent prisoners from seeing outside] destroying some furniture in cops’ offices.
The inquisitor Sparagna [the prosecutor in charge of op. Scripta Manent] get us already used to his trolling the sludge, it’s been 5 months now, under the pretext that Marco is now the life partner of my ex-partner, in the attempt to divide us, that he keeps in fact Marco in “isolation” from me and his other comrades, because of absurd and spurious fear of my hypothetical retaliation.
Aware that shoot in the legs of a powerful is not enough to become an anarchist in the true sense of the word, a person free from sexism and machismo of any sort. Unfortunately, I am still a long way from become this thing.
I reaffirm my friendship for Marco, who was and remains my comrade.
To him all my revolutionary solidarity in the hope I be able to hug him as soon as possible.
Strength, comrade!
Always for Anarchy!

Prison of Ferrara [Italy]: The Censorship confiscated a text by anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito (09/12/2016) [en]

The comrade Alfredo Cospito, imprisoned in AS2 [high security wing] in Ferrara for kneecapping of Adinolfi and who recently received a new arrest warrant for the operation named “Scripta Manent” — an operation which has led, on request of the Turin Prosecutor’s office, to a new wave of prison guards censorship on the prisoner’s correspondence — writes to us that his texts are being systematically confiscated.
In particular, Alfredo has sent a long contribution for a new publishing project, a new anarchist magazine of agitation and of theoretical analysis, which should be published at the beginning of next year. Alfredo wasn’t aware that his letter has been confiscated until 10 days after he sent it, when he did not receive any answer from the addressees who, unaware, actually urged him to send them the welcome contribution. In other words, the head of the wing, whose sad and infamous job is to photocopy every incoming and outgoing letter for prisoners subjected to the censorship and to send a copy to the prosecutor Sparagna [in charge of the Op.“Scripta Manent”], decided that in this case the spying was not sufficient; that the comrade’s text was not to come out at all.
A decision that at least has the merit of shedding light to the repressive hypocrisy of the democratic regime. The Power is not interested only in repression over those actions which answer with righteous violence to the immeasurably greater violence that the State and the Capital perpetrate every day in order to preserve their domination. The Power, from the Turin anti-mafia magistrates to the miserable jailers in Ferrara, doesn’t even tolerate for the prisoner comrades to continue to write, to agitate, to provoke, collaborating with, maybe even confronting, the reflections of other individuals who are not willing to be subjugated anymore.

You will never be able to isolate imprisoned comrades.
We would have preferred to publicly announce the publication of our magazine at the moment when it would actually be ready.
We will go forward with our publication, all the more proud knowing that it is already making the bureaucrats of repression nervous. Convinced that our complicity with Alfredo and with other imprisoned comrades it could not certainly be expressed in its whole joyful sincerity merely on the pages of a periodical.

Italy: Update on comrades arrested in operation “Scripta Manent” (27/10/2016) [en]

So, to recap, the situation of imprisoned comrades for the operation “Scripta Manent” is as follows...
Alfredo and Anna stopped their hunger strike, carried out while deathly silence prevailed outside. They ended the hunger strike following the revocation of prohibition on meeting between the arrested comrades in the same prisons. Therefore, Alfredo could meet Nicola again, and Anna was able to meet Valentina.
Instead, the prohibition on meeting is still applied in prison of Alessandria, where Alessandro and Marco are detained, and in prison of Terni where Danilo and Daniele are being held, despite the latter should not be in the High Security section AS2 for the charges he is being investigated for.
The comrades receive mail almost regularly (some letters and some envelopes with hard copy of updates from Internet are blocked).
I would remind to write to comrades in order to break the isolation that the prison itself creates. I would remind as well to put in envelope everything the comrades need to write you back (envelope, paper and stamp), to save their money which they are unfortunately forced to spend on weekly shopping inside the prison.

Break the isolation!
Solidarity and complicity with Alfredo, Nicola, Anna, Danilo, Valentina, Marco, Sandrone and Daniele!

Prison of Ferrara [Italy]: Letter of anarchist comrade Alfredo Cospito (20/10) [en]

Note by Anarhija.info: This letter was written during the hunger strike of comrade, started 3/10 and ended 25/10 when he was released from isolation, a punishment for his solidarity act with the CCF, and now he can meet the comrade Nicola Gai again (both in high surveillance wing). The comrade Anna Beniamino ended her hunger strike too, began 10/10, and she can finally meet the comrade Valentina Speziale, in the same prisof of Latina, both arrested in operation “Scripta Manent”.
I suppose that this translation contains errors, but since no one wanted to translate it until today (it was published 20/10) I decided to do it in my bad English.

Valentina, Danilo, Anna, Marco, Sandro, Daniele, Nicola friends, brothers, sisters, comrades were arrested and rearrested.
I should narrate the same old story about another fabrication. Instead, I want to talk about the reason why they were arrested. Brothers and sisters were arrested because they attacked, they were tired of waiting, they ignored the decisions of the majority and took action.
I remain optimistic and in high spirits because the logic of “1 + 1 = 2” tells me that the comrades who struck are still free, therefore they are able to strike again.
The power does not repress randomly. Today it wants to isolate and to annihilate part of the anarchist movement, a “small” as it may be it was able to break the chains that tied it to the “old social anarchy.”
A social anarchism that in suicidal and compulsive way looks for “consensus at any costs”. Diluting continuously its aspirations.
This vision that “never goes beyond” is very convenient for power, on the contrary it fears those anarchists who refuse that “consensus” ties their hands, because they believe that only out of the action (not made of abstract theories or searching-pursuing of “people”) can the strategy be born, the path to follow.
I don’t want comment the “charges” and so-called “evidences”. The only thing I would say is that brothers and sisters of FAI-FRI have always claimed with head held high, in front of black-robed pigs, their own merits, their own actions, taking the responsibilities, spitting in the pigs’ faces, as we did in Genoa.
My main priority is not to get out of prison at all costs, but to get out with head held high without having denied anything of what I was, and I am.
I will get out by hook or by crook, it will all depends on my strength, on my abilities, on the strength of my brothers and sisters outside, but definitely I will get out with head held high.
My ideal complicity goes to brothers and sisters of the “Cooperativa Artigiana Fuoco ed Affini”-FAI, to brothers and sisters of FAI-RAT(Rivolta Anonima Tremenda) and to brothers and sisters of Narodnaja Volja – FAI, whoever they are, wherever they are.
My ideal complicity goes to anarchism of praxis, which in new forms is rising in most of the world, after a long hibernation.
Forward, without fear.
The future is ours.
Thought and Dynamite
